In Plato’s Symposium, Diotima, an ancient Greek philosopher and seer, teaches Socrates and Plato the concept of Platonic love. In her view, love is a hierarchical ladder; loving the physical body is the “crudest” form of love, while loving wisdom, or philosophy, is the highest. In the series, I think of the girls as my Diotimas, guiding me toward the “perfect” love of the modern world.
