Roots
09/2025 - 12/2025
roots is a mobile app designed to help immigrant parents connect with their children. With roots, you can learn empathy skills, play games designed to facilitate intimacy, and reflect on the skills and games.
I know, I know: it's another mobile app. But throughout the entire process, we were really adamant about making it an app that forefronts the human being first. We talked to a bunch of immigrant parents, who gave us awesome feedback -- I even talked with my mom, and had kind of a revelatory moment. There's no streaks, no counters. It's a bit plain and boring, but that's kind of the point.
For this project, we won 1st in Greatest Personal Impact, 2nd in Greatest Societal Impact, and 3rd in Best Website out of 20+ projects! This was at the final expo for the class, CS 147, Intro to Human-Computer Interaction, where we presented in front of HCI industry experts with a final poster and demo and such.
I was in charge of the design: I made the Figma med-fi prototype entirely from scratch (no help from AI!), I coded and wrote the website, I even made the video (directing, cinematography, etc. etc.). Find out more here; the process and all of our deliverables!
